Ridgemont Employee Spotlight - Steve Bell, Senior Project Manager

Steve Bell has over twenty one years of experience in commercial construction, managing projects from design through construction completion, while maintaining effective communication with owners, architects, subcontractors and suppliers on a daily basis.

His responsibilities as Senior Project Manager, are to manage the entire construction process including project cost, quality control, contract documents, value engineering, subcontractor management, scheduling, strategic planning, coordination with internal project team members and client relations.


WHAT ARE THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE RIDGEMONT?

I tried to think of 3 words, but could not narrow it down.  The words I came up with:  Opportunity, Team, Enjoyable, Support, Flexible and Faithful.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT RIDGEMONT?

I like the sense of community and the family culture.  I have been places where everybody is just a name, or a number.  Everybody is a person at Ridgemont.

WHAT IS ON YOUR WISH LIST FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS FOR RIDGEMONT?

I always push myself to be a better leader and a mentor for what I call the “Young Guns”.  I want to progress my own abilities to be a valuable asset for Ridgemont.  However my biggest WISH is to fully survive a boot camp by walking away at the end without needing recovery time to drive, and be able to keep up with Micah in a game of basketball.  I have absolutely no wish to try and keep up with Jade!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING PROJECT AT RIDGEMONT?

I don’t have a favorite project, but different favorites for different reasons:  Mercer 4 because we negotiated repeat work from a client which historically hard bids every project. 

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT/GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT
AT RIDGEMONT?

1.   When Paul Camp commented to the Owner on a new project:  “The project has one of the strongest teams Ridgemont could put together.  They can handle any issue which could arise on the project.”……and we did.

2.   My firsts PFC meeting conclusion.  At the end, I gave my thoughts for my project path.  The response was all positive with a comment of “We knew hiring you would be a smart move.”

WHICH CORE VALUE DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THE MOST? WHY?

Integrity.  When a project is complete, the only thing we take away is our reputation.  Our reputation is our life blood for Clients and subcontractors.  If they don’t trust you, you will not last long in this industry.

DESCRIBE HOW YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH RIDGEMONT.

I have participated in Hearts with Hammers, with my youngest daughter, Leah.  I have also attended a few functions for Ridgemont, and most recently I participated in the can drive “Canstruction” disassembly.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CULTURE AT RIDGEMONT?

I describe the culture as a supportive family.  People take the time to talk, listen, support and encourage.  It is not always by somebody saying “Let me help you,” but sometimes just cracking a joke to give them a mental break on a stress point.  We all have relationships, some stronger than others.  I recently had a difficult buy-out situation.  I talked to a co-worker about it, and we identified a better approach.  Two phone calls later, the LOI was sent to the subcontractor.

ADVICE FOR NEW HIRES / POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES? CAREER LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED THUS FAR?  

I learned a long time ago the only thing we have in this industry is our reputation.  The reason I work at Ridgemont is due to my reputation as a Senior Project Manager.  My name was recommended to Jason Lillard in a weekend conversation with some subcontractor buddies I had previously worked and was currently working with.   Keep your integrity for all work, never let your emotions overtake you in any situation because then you can’t think clearly, and treat everybody with the respect they deserve. 

WHAT GETS YOU OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING?    

Funny, I asked this to my wife and she laughed, “What a dumb question to a workaholic!”  I get up every morning to accomplish something and make an impactful difference.  I don’t like to sit still, unless I am watching a Dallas Stars hockey game.  Otherwise I want to do something, whether it be working at my desk to reduce my To Do List, walking a jobsite evaluating issues, QC and schedule, at a school band event being one of “The Dads”, tinkering in my shop or mowing the lawn.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

I have both professional and personal success definitions:

1.   Professional success has many different levels such as reputation and respect.  However if I can explain something to someone so they better understand, I often consider that to be a bigger success than the completion of a project.

2.   Personal success is to fulfill life of others to reach their goals, and give my children the knowledge and education to make their own decisions in the path of life and pursue their dreams.  My success is not what I accomplish, but what I leave for others.

IF YOU COULD PICK UP A NEW SKILL WHAT WOULD IT BE?

To play guitar and speak Spanish.  I have tried to learn both, but I never stop enough to get adequate practice for proficiency.  The guitar is probably bigger to me as I grew in a house with a father playing fourteen instruments and both my children learning band instruments.

WHAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

I started reading about World War II in 2nd grade and have never stopped.  I took a ride in B-26 Flying Fortress for my 50th birthday.  I want to go to Pearl Harbor at retirement.  I also want to experience the fall colors of upper Northeast with my wife.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES/INTERESTS?

1.   Dallas Stars ice hockey

2.   Learning to grill now that I have a nice grill

3.    Yard/shop work

4.    Reading about World War II

5.    Bee Keeper.  I started helping my friend with his bee hives last year and I will have my own 2 hives within the next month

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WATCHING?

Dallas Stars hockey (I have not missed a game in over 4 years), NCIS, NCIS New Orleans, Chicago Fire.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN RIDGEMONT CHANGE OVER THE YEARS? HOW HAS RIDGEMONT GROWN?

I have seen Ridgemont grow both in number and quality of employees.  I think RCC has also grown with the culture of the company.  I have been places that talk of family and individual successes, but this is the first time to experience the attitude.  I have also seen the camaraderie of Ridgemont grow both in group events/activities and interest of peoples personal endeavors, which goes right back to my description of the Ridgemont culture of “Supportive Family.”

Ridgemont Project Spotlight - Parc 820,Fort Worth, TX

Parc 820 is a two-phase industrial distribution project of Loop 820 in Fort Worth, TX. The project by Scannell Properties includes one industrial building totaling 220,000 SF (Phase 1) and the other totaling 270,000 SF (Phase 2).

Both buildings are tilt-wall and include a variety of textured walls and canopies for exterior features.

Ridgemont interviewed the Project Manager, Hector Rivera who worked on the Parc 820 project, below you can find an inside look into how the project was accomplished.


WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THIS PROJECT?

Developing a massive project around a natural Water of the US territory and the process to obtain the compulsory permits.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF THIS PROJECT?  

Finishing the project with no punch list requests from the Owner, just before the date that the Owner needed the buildings. The project was also completed on budget, even though we went through very challenging milestones and extended timeline.

WHAT ARE SOME LESSONS LEARNED FROM THIS PROJECT?

Identify, protect and control the access to all designated areas (i.e. W.O.U.S.) on a project site prior to breaking ground. Make sure your subcontractors and all personnel understand the importance of it. Keep that control during the whole process…and most important ” don’t let your guard down…remain vigilant”.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO THANK YOUR TEAM MEMBERS THAT WORKED ON THIS PROJECT WITH YOU?

I would like to thank them for all the hard work, commitment, SUPPORT and patience.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU WORKING ON THIS PROJECT?

It really surprised me that not with standing the milestones and the difficulties found in this project, how IMPORTANT it was to maintain the communication and openness with our client. Keeping our client informed on every step of the solution process was the key to keep their trust intact, and the main factor to obtain the satisfaction of ending the project strong.

HOW DO YOU THINK THIS PROJECT WILL IMPACT THE COMMUNITY IT IS IN?

Being and an industrial park, it would help the continuous economic growth and progress that the North Texas Region has shown for the last decade.

Ridgemont Employee Spotlight - Marcia Johnson, Accounts Payable Manager

Marcia has been apart of the Ridgemont family for 11 years, and currently holds the position as Accounts Payable Manager. Marcia this role is responsible for providing financial, administrative and clerical services.

 As Accounts Payable Manager, Marcia, performs the day to day processing of accounts payable transactions so that finances are maintained in an effective, up to date and accurate manner.  This includes processing and monitoring payments and expenditures to ensure accuracy and timeliness so that vendors and suppliers are paid within established time limits.  This role reports to the vice President Secretary & Treasurer.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT RIDGEMONT?

I have always appreciated Ridgemont’s flexibility that enabled me to be a very active parent. Like all, my children are my heart and soul and I never wanted to miss out on anything that they were.

WHAT IS ON YOUR WISH LIST FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS FOR RIDGEMONT?

Over the next 5 years, my only wish for Ridgemont is to continue to grow and improve on the successful journey that it is already on. It’s truly on pace to be at the top of the industry, and I will do whatever I can to help with that.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING PROJECT AT RIDGEMONT?

Any project that began and ended without a lien on it was most rewarding for me.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT/GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT
AT RIDGEMONT?

My proudest moment was in 2009 when I walked into Dixie’s office and asked her for a challenge, which lead me to taking on a role in the accounting department. I was so proud that she believed in me. It definitely changed the direction of my life.

WHICH CORE VALUE DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THE MOST? WHY?

I feel like I identify more so with Integrity. I was raised by my grandparents, so I learned a lot of old-school values. My grandfather would always tell me to always be honest, respectful, giving and never compromise on my morals. I hold those words near and dear to my heart, he was a wise man.

DESCRIBE HOW YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH RIDGEMONT.

I have been involved in Hearts & Hammers, which has provided aid in a neighborhood that I grew up in.  It’s always pure joy to be involved in any act of kindness and giving back, but especially when it’s within your own community.  Most of those people have been forgotten about or written off.  I have also participated in a couple of donation drives at Ridgemont. One for Louisiana flood victims and most recently a clothing drive for the Dallas homeless community. I am also currently on the Philanthropy committee, where we find multiple events and/or organizations to contribute to throughout the year. It’s good for the soul.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CULTURE AT RIDGEMONT?

The culture at Ridgemont is geared toward family. Not only our family at our homes, but the family that we have built within the 4 walls at RCC. I’ve gained many sisters and brothers over the last 11 years.

ADVICE FOR NEW HIRES / POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES? CAREER LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED THUS FAR?  

Come in, buckle up and enjoy the ride. But along the journey, work hard, get involved and stay focused. Do your best to keep clients happy.

WHAT GETS YOU OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING?    

My family is the reason that I breathe. My ability to take care of them drives me to be the best me that I can be. My biggest fear in the world has always been the inability to take care of my family.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

Success to me is to have lived life knowing that I made it easier for another person to breathe.

IF YOU COULD PICK UP A NEW SKILL WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I would love to be bilingual.

WHAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

As I have gotten more involved with the church and the giving of myself and my time to others, I would like to continue with that by getting involved on mission trips. I give locally now, I would like to take that abroad. Love is needed across the globe.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES/INTERESTS?

I spend tons of time with my family. I also love singing, working with the youth at church, and also finding different
non-profits to volunteer with.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WATCHING?

I am currently watching Manifest, The Passage and Survivor.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN RIDGEMONT CHANGE OVER THE YEARS? HOW HAS RIDGEMONT GROWN?

Ridgemont has grown astronomically over the years. When I first started there were only about 5 people on the entire 2nd floor. Since then, there has been one addition to the building and now about to do a 2nd one. It just blows my mind. The number of projects that have been added to the list speaks volumes of Ridgemont and its employees. The ability to build great relationships with clients has been earned by identifying with our core values and continuous efforts to maintain those relationships. I’m proud to say that I am an employee of Ridgemont Commercial Construction.

Kroger Marketplace, McKinney, TX

Located across the Dallas / Fort Worth metroplex, Kroger and its Kroger Signature stores are one of the nation’s largest grocery retailers. Ridgemont has consistently been hired for renovation and ground up construction, as well as providing construction services for all adjacent retail in the shopping center.

Of special interest, the Kroger Signature stores gives shoppers a wider product selection with organic and all-natural foods, fully cooked entrees, health and beauty care products.

Ridgemont Recently Completed Projects

Razyor Ranch, Denton, TX

Rayzor Ranch is a 400-acre mixed-use development in the attractive northwest area of Denton. Rayzor Ranch Town Center and Marketplace will come together as the largest super-regional shopping development between Dallas-Fort Worth and Oklahoma City.

Ridgemont recently completed work on part of the development including a Tuesday Morning, Marshalls and 2 shell buildings. Tenants for the shell buildings include, CareNow, Starbucks, James Avery and more to come.

Ridgemont Employee Spotlight - Maureen McDonnell , Assistant Project Coordinator

This month’s Ridgemont Employee Spotlight is, Maureen McDonnell. Maureen currently holds the position of Assistant Project Coordinator for Ridgemont Commercial Construction. Maureen has been apart of the Ridgemont family for 5 years, February 4th will be her anniversary here at Ridgemont.

As Assistant Project Coordinator Maureen is responsible for coordinating with the Project Managers and Superintendents to complete client change orders, verify supporting documents, and maintain files for all past and present projects. Thank you Maureen for all your hard work, we are happy to have you on the Ridgemont team!

Not sure that I can define a specific moment, I am just proud to be a Ridgemont employee.

I feel like I identify with them all. If I had to chose one, it would be People. I really do enjoy helping and taking care of people.   

Describe how you have been involved with giving back to the community through ridgemont.

I got involved with Airborne Angles 5 years ago when Nancy first stopped by the office to collect a donation from Ridgemont. The American flag that was delivered that same day now sits in our large conference room. I still continue to volunteer with Airborne Angles and I have officially become an “Angel”. It will hit home a little harder this year as my son, Aidan, has committed to the Army when he graduates in June. We are so proud and excited for his future.

Airborne Angel Cadets is a completely volunteer based organization that sends packages to our troops filled with anything and everything from toiletries to card games. All the packages are contributions made by generous donors.

I have also had the pleasure of volunteering at Hearts and Hammers. It warms my heart to see the look of pure joy and appreciation it brought to the owners of the homes we worked on. They are able to hold their heads a little higher and be proud where they live.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CULTURE AT RIDGEMONT?

Friendly and collaborative. Ridgemont has always been encouraging and listens when employees provide feedback on the betterment of the company, but also to improve employee’s personal physical and mental health.   

ADVICE FOR NEW HIRES / POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES? CAREER LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED THUS FAR?  

Don’t be content to not know the answers, speak up and ask questions.

If you have an idea don’t be afraid to share it.

Never take the easy way out, unless it aligns with the best way to complete the task at hand.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?    

My family, being able to contribute to the success of my household.

How do you define success?

Success is never giving up.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN RIDGEMONT CHANGE OVER THE YEARS? HOW HAS RIDGEMONT GROWN?

Ridgemont has grown in the sheer volume of employees and projects. The projects have not only grown in size but each market segment has experienced an increase in a variety of projects. When I first started our jobs filled half of a page, now everywhere I go I see a Ridgemont trailer. My kids got sick of me pointing out a trailer every time I saw one!

Groendyke Transport Facility, Fort Worth, TX

The Groendyke Transport Facility is located off Cantrell Sansom Rd. in Fort Worth, TX. The facility is for Groendyke Transport, which is one of the largest tank-truck carriers in the nation.

The tilt-wall facility includes four maintenance bays, one wash bay, and office finish out which includes a dispatch and driver room.

Ridgemont Subcontractor Appreciation BBQ Cook Off

It is that time of year again, the annual Ridgemont Subcontractor Appreciation BBQ Cook Off!

“At Ridgemont Subcontractor relationships are just as important as our relationships with owners or our clients. They are an essential part of the Ridgemont team,” Dennis Mason, Ridgemont Vice President of Field Operations/Principal.


A day filled with food, friends and more, the Subcontractor Appreciation BBQ is a time to celebrate Ridgemont’s talented team of subcontractors. Each year a collection of Ridgemont’s subcontractors gather together to enjoy some great BBQ cooked up by our field staff.

This year we changed things up a bit by having a cook off competition with the following categories:

  • Best Bloody Mary

  • Best Appetizer

  • Best Meat Entree

  • Best Dessert

Each team had the opportunity to create a dish for each category, which was then scored on a 1-10 scale based on presentation, appeal, flavor and creativity. The submission with the overall highest score was named the winner of that category. And, the team with the overall highest scores in multiple categories was named Grand Champion.

“The event was first class just like everything else that we get to be a part of with Ridgemont.  When we received the invitation to come to the cook off we knew immediately that we wanted to participate.  It was great to catch up with our Ridgemont team in such a fun and relaxed environment.  We are looking forward to defending our championship title next year”, Kris Phillips, Wildstone Construction Marketing Director.

Ridgemont Employee Spotlight - Randy Allen, Senior Superintendent

Randy Allen has over twenty six years of successfully overseeing all phases of multi-million dollar commercial construction facilities. He is result-orientated with the ability to coordinate on multiple projects, various teams simultaneously, coupled with the skill-set to effectively manage subcontractor teams and coordinate with our project manager in a deadline-driven environment.

Randy is dedicated to delivering the best quality construction while adhering to all deadlines, budgets and safety standards. He is a stern supervisor, an effective communicator, as well as methodical and organized professional.

Being on the winning team that was awarded the Texo Distinguished Building Award for the Texas Health Resource Outpatient Facility in Willow Park, TX in 2014.

WHICH CORE VALUE DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THE MOST? WHY?

All core values are important to me and what I personally strive for in my personal life. Each one is so important to live by, however, if I had just one to choose it would be integrity.

Walking with the Lord daily and keeping my personal relationship in tact is success to me. Being a good husband, father, son and uncle is so critical to me in the success of my life.
